Behind this Website

Most modern websites today are built using website builders or heavily managed platforms such as Squarespace, Wix or simplified “all-in-one” WordPress hosting services. These systems are marketed as quick and easy ways to build a website, but behind the scenes they often sacrifice performance, flexibility and long-term control.

Fat Boys Adventures is built very differently.

Having spent more than twenty years working with Linux servers, web hosting environments and WordPress infrastructure, I prefer running websites using a lean, self-managed setup that focuses on performance, reliability and control rather than convenience or restrictive platforms.

The result is a system that is faster, more secure and far more flexible than the typical website builder platforms that many companies are sold today.

The Server Infrastructure

This website runs on a virtual private server hosted with Hetzner, one of Europe’s most respected infrastructure providers. Hetzner offers extremely reliable data centre infrastructure at very competitive pricing, making it an ideal platform for running lightweight high-performance websites.

Over the years I have worked with several Linux operating systems including CentOS 6, 7 and 8, AlmaLinux 7, 8 and 9, and Rocky Linux 7, 8 and 9, all of which form part of the Red Hat ecosystem commonly used for web hosting environments.

For this site the server environment is built using Centmin Mod, a highly optimised Nginx-based web stack designed specifically for running WordPress efficiently. Unlike traditional hosting control panels such as cPanel, Centmin Mod focuses on performance and lean configuration rather than graphical interfaces and unnecessary overhead.

Running a properly configured VPS means the website is not competing for resources with hundreds of unrelated websites on a shared hosting server, which immediately improves both performance and reliability.

WordPress Performance Optimisation

The WordPress installation itself is tuned to run efficiently rather than relying on heavy plugin stacks that slow sites down.

The performance stack used here includes Nginx, optimised PHP-FPM, Redis object caching, and Cloudflare CDN and edge protection.

Redis caching dramatically reduces database queries and improves response times, while Cloudflare sits in front of the server acting as a global content delivery network and security layer. This setup speeds up page delivery worldwide while also protecting the origin server from direct exposure to the internet.

This layered architecture results in a WordPress installation that performs far better than the typical shared hosting or template-builder environment.

Email Done Properly

One of the most common problems with modern website setups is email configuration.

Many web design agencies do not run proper email infrastructure at all. Instead they configure email accounts using Gmail or Google Workspace while presenting them to the customer as if they are normal domain-based email systems.

This approach is often used because the hosting environment they have chosen has poor IP reputation or unreliable mail server infrastructure.

For this website email is handled separately using MXRoute, a specialist email hosting provider known for excellent deliverability and strong mail server reputation.

The DNS configuration simply routes email traffic through MX records to the MXRoute servers, keeping email completely separate from the web hosting environment. Separating these systems improves reliability and ensures that email delivery is not affected by the website hosting platform.

Performance and Security Matter

A properly engineered website should not simply work. It should also perform well under real technical testing and follow proper security practices.

Secure HTTPS configurations should score highly under independent testing platforms such as Qualys SSL Labs, ensuring modern encryption protocols and secure configurations are in place.

Performance is equally important. Tools such as GTmetrix and Google PageSpeed Insights provide valuable insight into how efficiently a site loads under real-world conditions. Fast loading pages improve both user experience and search engine ranking.

Administrative security is another area that is frequently ignored on poorly configured hosting platforms. The WordPress administration interface is one of the most common attack targets on the internet, which is why additional layers of protection are often implemented.

This can include password protecting the administration area, adding additional authentication layers or restricting access to known static IP addresses only. In some configurations the admin interface can be completely inaccessible from the wider internet unless accessed from trusted locations.

These simple security measures dramatically reduce the attack surface of a website.

The Problem With Many Web Agencies

Unfortunately many companies selling websites today rely almost entirely on template-driven systems and generic hosting environments.

In many cases:

  • websites are placed on oversold shared servers
  • email is outsourced to Gmail while pretending to be domain mail
  • performance optimisation is minimal
  • the customer has little or no control over the infrastructure

These platforms may work for simple brochure websites, but they are rarely designed with long-term performance, flexibility or proper technical engineering in mind.

After more than twenty years working with Linux servers and web hosting infrastructure, a pattern becomes very difficult to ignore across a large portion of the web design and SEO industry. Many of the companies presenting themselves as specialists are not engineers or developers in any meaningful technical sense. Instead they operate primarily as sales-driven service businesses assembling pre-built systems rather than designing or engineering proper platforms.

In practice it is remarkably common to encounter agencies that cannot write or modify PHP code, cannot administer a Linux server via SSH, cannot configure web servers correctly and have no real understanding of caching layers, database optimisation or performance tuning.

Instead the entire process revolves around drag-and-drop page builders, pre-packaged themes and plugin stacks that allow something to be assembled quickly. The end result may look impressive on the surface, but underneath it is often little more than a collection of templates running on generic hosting infrastructure.

Despite the lack of real engineering, these services are frequently marketed as specialist expertise and sold to businesses at extremely high prices. From a technical standpoint the gap between a template-assembled website and a properly engineered hosting environment is enormous, even if that difference is not immediately obvious to the client.

To put that into perspective, the entire build of this website — from provisioning the Linux server through to the finished WordPress installation, Cloudflare configuration and MXRoute email setup — took roughly six hours from start to finish. That includes installing the Centmin Mod stack, configuring caching, setting up DNS, deploying WordPress, populating wordpress (ie what your reading now) pages, posts and photos and then ensuring email delivery is routed correctly.

It is not uncommon for web design companies to charge £1,500 to £2,000 or a lot more for a website build that ultimately delivers far less in terms of infrastructure and technical engineering. In many cases the customer is paying a significant fee for a front-end design assembled using templates, while the underlying hosting environment remains slow, generic and poorly optimised.

Engineering Over Templates

The difference between a template-driven website and a properly engineered hosting environment is similar to the difference between assembling flat-pack furniture and building something properly from raw materials.

Template systems prioritise speed of deployment.

Engineered systems prioritise stability, performance and control.

Running a properly configured VPS with optimised infrastructure provides full control over the system, significantly better performance and far lower long-term operating costs than relying on generic hosted platforms.

Domain Ownership – One Very Important Rule

One of the most important lessons when building a website is always keep control of your domain name.

When registering a domain, it should always be purchased and managed through your own registrar account, not through a web design agency or hosting company.

Allowing a third party to own or control your domain name can create serious problems if a dispute arises or if you decide to move your website elsewhere in the future. In some cases businesses have discovered that they do not technically own their own domain name because it was registered under the agency’s account.

When that happens, the website owner can find themselves completely dependent on the agency that registered the domain.

The safest approach is simple: register the domain yourself, keep it under your own account and only provide the necessary DNS access to hosting services when required.

That way the domain — which is ultimately the most important digital asset of any website — always remains under your direct control.

Why It Matters

For Fat Boys Adventures the technology behind the website is simply a practical tool.

The aim is not to build something complicated, but to create a fast, reliable and secure platform that allows the focus to remain on what really matters — travelling, riding and sharing motorcycle adventures.

By running a properly configured server environment with dedicated performance optimisation and reliable email infrastructure, the site remains lightweight, responsive and entirely under our own control.

That means more time spent riding great roads and trails across Europe and the UK, and far less time dealing with restrictive platforms or unreliable hosting systems.

Take the long road home — miles today, stories tomorrow.
